UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has been heavily criticized for his handling of the Gaza war, including these last few days by Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. To help us understand Guterres’s role better, let’s consider a membership organization like the UN that’s familiar to most of us- a synagogue.
I think people have become so polarized that Guterres vouching for a ceasefire = anti Israel. As you explained, his job is to remain impartial, acknowledge loss for all involved, and make decisions in an effort to promote global peace. I think what we, as a polarized society, fail to remember is that Hamas’s terrorist attack on October 7th and the bombing of thousands of people in Gaza are both horrible things that should be condemned. Theoretically, we all want a ceasefire. Somehow it feels like that has gotten lost amid this horrific mess…
